I often hear, both in my person and professional life, that it is not what the person said but how the person said it that is upsetting to the other person. Specifically, the tone in which the person says it is what others find to be most upsetting. Well, as it turns out, the research suggests that people are more sensitive to tone than to the explicit content of spoken or written language. So I guess peoples complaints are accurate when they said it is not what you say but how you say it.
